Book a Strategy Call
A DOCUMENTARY

My
Journey.

The life behind the work. The lessons behind the strategy. The machine that taught me everything about building something that lasts.

01

ORIGINS

Built by where you come from.

I grew up watching people around me build things with their hands — businesses, homes, routines. Nobody had a roadmap. They had work ethic, patience, and the belief that consistency compounds. That lesson arrived long before I had a word for it.

Heritage shapes how you think about time. About investment. About what matters enough to do properly. The East Asian ethic of craftsmanship — doing one thing well rather than many things adequately — is woven into how I approach every engagement.

“The long game was never a strategy. It was a value.”

02 – 03

LESSONS & CAREER

Twenty years.

One consistent thread.

Enterprise clients in automotive, logistics, recruitment,
technology, and FMCG. Four continents. Dozens of markets.
Every engagement taught the same lesson: the organisations
that win long-term are the ones who build systems, not
campaigns.

The breadth was never accidental. I wanted to understand how different industries solve the same problem — how to get the
right buyer to trust you enough to act. That question drove
everything.

First role in digital marketing

Before SEO had a name. Before social media. A blank canvas and a dial-up connection.

THE REBUILD

“You think failure is the end. It’s actually the beginning — you just don’t know it yet.”

I lost my job.

And it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I’m not going to sanitise this. In 2018 I lost my job. The role was gone, the team was restructured, and twenty years of building my professional identity inside other people’s organisations suddenly meant nothing. I was in my mid-forties. I had a family. I had responsibilities. And I had exactly zero certainty about what came next.

The months that followed were some of the hardest I’ve experienced. Not because of the practical difficulties — those are solvable — but because of what it does to your sense of self. Who are you when the title is gone? What do you know, really know, when there’s no institution backing your name?

The answer to that question became F0RTUN8. Not immediately. Not easily. But every day of that uncertainty was clarifying something — stripping back the borrowed confidence and leaving only what was genuinely mine.

2018

The job ends.

No warning. One meeting. Twenty years of institutional identity — gone in a morning. The silence that followed was the loudest thing I’d ever heard.

2018 -19

What comes next.

Six months of real uncertainty. No plan. Just the question: do I find another director role and rebuild someone else’s brand — or do I finally build something I believe in?

2019

The consultancy opens.

One laptop. One client. Zero guarantees. F0RTUN8 begins not with a launch strategy, but with the decision to start.

2020

Hudson Talent Solutions.

First anchor client. A recruitment firm that needed more than a rebrand — they needed a complete authority repositioning. The framework was applied for the first time. It worked.

2021

Clean Air.

Second major engagement. A B2B brand in a technical category, invisible to the buyers who needed them most. Entity SEO, GEO, and thought leadership — built from scratch.

2022 –23

The practice grows.

Referral-only. No advertising. The work speaking for itself — the way it should. The methodology formalised as the F0RTUN8 Framework™.

CLIENT 01 — HUDSON TALENT SOLUTIONS

The first real proof that the framework worked.

Hudson were a transactional recruitment firm invisible to the senior clients they wanted to attract. In twelve months: authority repositioning, entity SEO, thought leadership architecture, and an AI citation presence built across four major LLMs. They went from unknown to recognised. That result changed my confidence in what I’d built.

CLIENT 02 — CLEAN AIR

A technical category with no visibility and the right to own it.

Clean Air operated in a specialist B2B space where buyers existed but couldn’t find them. GEO, AEO, and deep entity authority work — structured for discoverability by both search engines and AI systems. The project validated that the framework could cross industries without losing precision.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Leaving is not failure.

Staying when you know better – is.

In 2019 I walked away from a director title, a reliable salary, and every structure that had defined my professional identity for nearly two decades. Not because I had a plan. Because I had a conviction — that the best work of my life would only happen if I owned it completely.

Starting from scratch is a particular kind of education. Every client is earned. Every invoice is deliberate. There is no team to absorb the mistakes, no brand to borrow credibility from, no safety net between the work and its consequences. That exposure is uncomfortable. It is also clarifying in a way that nothing else is.

Independence forced a question I’d been avoiding for years: what do I actually believe about how marketing works? Not what the brief said. Not what the board approved. What do I think is true? F0RTUN8 is the answer to that question.

“I didn’t leave to be free. I left to be accountable. To the work. To the outcomes. To myself.”

2019

THE YEAR EVERYTHING CHANGED

01

The risk

No salary. No title. No floor. Just the work and its consequences.

02

The conviction

That depth outperforms breadth. That owned work compounds. That character is a competitive advantage.

03

The outcome

F0RTUN8. A methodology forged from two decades of enterprise practice and three years of building alone.

05

THE 280Z

The machine is the

metaphor.

Every part matters.

Every bolt has purpose.

Every decision affects the outcome.

In 2020 I bought a 1978 Datsun 280Z. Not because I needed a car project. Because I needed a reminder of what it means to build something properly. Slowly. By hand. Without shortcuts.

Building a business isn’t much different. Neither is building a life. Every choice compounds. Every shortcut costs you later. Every decision you make with integrity becomes load-bearing.

The 280Z isn’t a car project. It’s a practice. A weekly reminder that the work worth doing is the work that demands everything — and rewards patience over speed.

FAMILY

Ian Yu

Husband. Father. Builder.

The reason the long game matters.

Family.

Everything I build, I build with my children in mind. Not as legacy — as example. What does it mean to commit fully to your work? To do it with integrity? To keep going when the outcome isn’t guaranteed? Those are the questions I want to answer by how I show up.

Family is not separate from work. It is the reason the work has character. It demands that everything I do be worth the time it costs. It keeps ambition honest. It keeps success meaningful. F0RTUN8 exists because of that conviction — not despite it.

FORTUN8

Everything

aligns.

F0RTUN8 was not built overnight. It emerged from twenty years of enterprise experience, years of setbacks, a workshop full of tools, a family that demands your best, and a belief that the most durable brands are engineered — not assembled.

The name contains the zero deliberately — a reminder that success is not fortune. It is engineered. Methodically. Repeatedly. Over time. The same way you restore a 45-year-old machine: with patience, with precision, and with a refusal to cut corners.

sei

Precision

Every recommendation is grounded in rigour. We audit before we advise. We diagnose before we prescribe. Precision is not perfectionism — it’s respect for your time and resources.

nin

Patience

Authority compounds slowly. Visibility earns over time. We engineer for the long arc, not the quarterly report. Every client we work with commits to thinking in years, not weeks.

sei

Sincerity

We work with a small number of clients precisely because genuine partnership requires honesty. We will tell you what you need to hear, not what’s easiest to say.

It’s engineered.

Purpose.

Everything starts with knowing exactly what you’re building — and why. Without purpose, strategy is just activity.

Patience.

Authority compounds slowly. Visibility earns over time. The work that lasts is always the work that waited longest to be rushed.

Integrity.

The quality of your decisions when no one is watching determines the quality of your outcomes when everyone is. No shortcuts. No exceptions.

Consistency.

Not inspiration. Not momentum. Consistency. Showing up with the same standard on the hardest day as on the best. That’s the compound interest of character.

Every day.

Not inspiration. Not momentum. Consistency. Showing up with the same standard on the hardest day as on the best. That’s the compound interest of character.

If this resonates — if you believe that the work worth doing is the work done properly — then perhaps we should talk. F0RTUN8 works with a small number of clients who share that conviction.
