Legacy Work / WORK Wheels Japan × Tanoshi
A DOCUMENTARY

WORK Wheels Japan
× Tanoshi.

A collaboration built not on product, but on trust. Not on campaigns, but on craft. This is the story of a partnership that outlasted every deliverable.

2015

COLLABORATION BEGINS

THE COLLABORATION

The official collaboration film documenting the WORK Wheels Japan × Tanoshi partnership — shot across Tokyo Auto Salon and Osaka Auto Messe, 2015–2016.

2015 — 2018

CHAPTER 01

The

Beginning.

WORK Wheels is not simply a manufacturer. In Japan, the name carries the weight of decades of precision engineering, motorsport heritage, and an obsessive commitment to quality that is rare in any industry. To collaborate with WORK was to enter a conversation about craft that most brands never have the opportunity to participate in.

The approach from the beginning was clear: this would not be a sponsorship. It would not be product placement or a badge transaction. If we were going to build something together, it had to be built on shared values — and the shared value, in both cases, was the belief that everything worth doing is worth doing properly.

“WORK didn’t need Tanoshi. They chose to collaborate because they saw the same standard in the work.”

CHAPTER 02

Shared

Values.

Tanoshi — 楽しい — means enjoyment. Pleasure in the doing. The Japanese concept behind the brand was that the best automotive culture isn’t about performance data or status signalling. It’s about the feeling of building something you love, surrounded by people who love it too.

WORK’s philosophy was a natural mirror. Their products exist because someone refused to compromise on what a wheel could be. That precision — that refusal to accept good enough — was the same instinct that ran through every creative decision at Tanoshi. Before a product was discussed, a shared philosophy was understood.

CHAPTER 03

Building

Together.

The collaboration expanded across multiple disciplines simultaneously. Creative direction, apparel design, event strategy, community activation, and cultural storytelling — all developed in parallel, all reinforcing the same core identity. Nothing existed in isolation. Every element was designed to deepen the story, not merely add to the product offering.

The apparel collection was not merchandise. It was a cultural statement — a way for the Tanoshi community to carry the collaboration into their daily lives. The design language drew directly from Japanese precision engineering aesthetics: clean geometry, restrained colour, purposeful construction. Every piece was built to last, just like the wheels it celebrated.

Creative Direction

Visual identity, campaign art direction, editorial styling across all touchpoints.

Apparel Collection

Seasonal apparel designed around Japanese precision aesthetics. Restrained, purposeful, built to last.

Community Strategy

Cultivating enthusiasts through shared identity rather than advertising broadcast.

Event Presence

Tokyo Auto Salon and Osaka Auto Messe — curated booth presence, not spectacle.

Editorial Content

Japanese magazine features earned through quality, not placement budget.

Brand Narrative

A consistent story told across every surface — products, events, collaborations, people.

THE STAGE

CHAPTER 04

Tokyo Auto Salon.

東京オートサロン.

Tokyo Auto Salon is the largest custom automotive show in Japan — attended by tens of thousands of enthusiasts, industry professionals, and international media. Being present is not enough. The work had to speak for itself in an environment where every booth competed for attention. The WORK Wheels × Tanoshi presence was built around restraint — a curated space that invited people to stop, to look closely, to ask questions.

The result was not high footfall metrics. It was the right conversations — with media, with potential collaborators, with brand representatives who understood what they were looking at. That selectivity was intentional.

CHAPTER 05

Osaka Auto Messe.

大阪オートメッセ.

Osaka Auto Messe has a different character to Tokyo — more regional, more personal, more community-driven. The WORK × Tanoshi presence here was an opportunity to deepen rather than broaden. The audience was smaller, more engaged, and more likely to become genuine community members rather than passing observers.

The two shows together told a complete story: national reach with local depth. Scale without losing the personal quality that made the collaboration worth having in the first place.

CHAPTER 06

Still
connected.

Today.

Years after the collaboration formally concluded, something happened that is worth recording. The current President of WORK Wheels Japan shared the collaboration film. Not a repost. Not an archive dig. A deliberate act — choosing to share this work with his network as something he valued.

That moment is not a marketing story. It is a relationship story. A reminder that the people who matter most in any professional life are not always the ones you are currently working with. They are the ones who, years later, still think of you when they see something worth sharing.

No invoice was associated with that share. No campaign was activated. No brief had been written. It happened because the relationship was real — and because the work, when it was made, was made properly.

“Great partnerships aren’t measured by campaigns. They’re measured by the trust that remains years later.”

— Ian Yu, F0RTUN8

THE MOMENT

2024

President, WORK Wheels Japan

WORK Co., Ltd. — Osaka, Japan

Shared the WORK Wheels Japan × Tanoshi collaboration film with his network — a deliberate recognition of a creative partnership that began nearly a decade earlier.

This was not a campaign. No brief was written. No invoice was raised. The relationship simply endured.

1

Years after

The collaboration formally concluded years before this moment.

No campaign

No brief. No budget. No strategy document. Just a person choosing to share.

Still alive

Authentic relationships have no expiry. That’s the point.

THE F0RTUN8 CONNECTION

This is exactly why the F0RTUN8 Framework™ is built around relationships, not reach. Impressions decay. Algorithm-driven audiences scatter. But a genuine relationship with a person who trusts your work — that persists. That compounds. That is worth more than any campaign metric can capture.

CHAPTER 07

Reflection.

振り返り.

Looking back at this collaboration now — not with the nostalgia of a good memory, but with the clarity of distance — certain truths are easier to see. The work mattered not because of what it produced, but because of how it was made. With attention. With respect. With the understanding that every decision, however small, would be visible to people who cared about quality.

The apparel is long since sold. The booths have been taken down. The events have become memories in the minds of the people who were there. What remains is the relationship — and what that relationship has come to represent about how I think about every engagement I take on now.

Every project I work on through F0RTUN8 carries the influence of this collaboration. The instinct to ask: will this work still mean something in ten years? Will the people involved still want to share it? If the answer is no, then the work is not yet good enough.

On craft

The standard you set in private defines what you’re capable of in public. There are no shortcuts that don’t cost you later.

On partnerships

Choose collaborators based on shared values, not complementary capabilities. Values outlast every deliverable.

On community

Community is not a channel. It’s a consequence of doing work that people genuinely want to belong to.

On longevity

A relationship that endures past the last invoice is worth more than a hundred relationships that end with it.

Some partnerships create products.

The best partnerships create legacy.
